Slips, Trips, and Eggnog Sips: The Holiday Hazards You Didn’t See Coming!
The holidays are a magical time of year, but let’s be real—they can also bring some unexpected risks. As someone who works in personal injury, I see my fair share of cases during this season that no one could have predicted. And trust me, some of them are as festive as they are unfortunate. From icy walkways to office parties that get a little too rowdy, the holiday season is full of hidden hazards. So, let’s unwrap some of the unique risks that come with all the decking of halls and ringing of bells—and how to keep yourself (and your guests) safe.
Picture this: A homeowner is super excited to host their annual holiday lights display. It’s an all-out winter wonderland in their backyard, complete with hot cocoa and those inflatable decorations that wave around like they’re saying hi to everyone who walks by. But here’s the catch—they didn’t think to salt the icy path leading to the display. A guest (let’s call him Joe) takes a nasty fall and ends up with a broken ankle. Now Joe has medical bills, missed work, and a lot of pain—and that homeowner might have a serious premises liability problem on their hands. Under California law, property owners have a duty to maintain their property in a reasonably safe condition for visitors. That includes fixing hazards like ice or, at the very least, warning people about them.
There are plenty of other holiday hazards we don’t always think about. Decorations, for example, can be tricky. Twinkling lights are gorgeous, but extension cords stretched across walkways? Not so much. And those inflatable reindeer and snowmen might look great in your yard but can create unexpected tripping hazards if they’re too close to high-traffic areas. Then there are office parties. Hosting a holiday party with alcohol might sound like a great idea, but employers need to be careful. While California’s “social host” liability laws offer some protection, there’s still a risk of legal issues if someone overindulges and causes harm. And let’s not forget holiday traffic. Accident rates skyrocket this time of year because people are rushing to shop, distracted by GPS directions, or just not paying attention in crowded parking lots.
So how can we keep the holidays merry and safe? If you’re hosting, do a quick safety check before guests arrive. Clear walkways, salt any ice, and think twice about where you’re placing decorations. If you’re planning a party, keep an eye on alcohol consumption and consider offering ride share credits to make sure everyone gets home safely. And if you’re driving, take it slow, avoid distractions, and be extra cautious in parking lots. That last-minute gift isn’t worth an accident.
The holidays are meant for making memories, not personal injury claims. With a little extra care, we can all do our part to keep the season joyful and injury-free. Have you ever had a holiday mishap or seen something like this happen? Share your stories in the comments—I’d love to hear them. And as always, if you’ve got questions or want to connect, I’m here to help. Let’s make this holiday season safe and bright for everyone!
